Creating a social media calendar is one of the best ways to improve your social media marketing. When you have a plan in place, it’s easier to create engaging content and stay on track. In this blog post, we will discuss five tips for creating a social media calendar that gets results!
Decide on which social media platform you will use.
There are so many different types of platforms to advertise your books. Choosing the right one may be difficult to do. The best solution is to use the platform you are currently using and become a master of it. Learn more about its algorithm to use it in your favor. Follow others in your niche that have a large or huge following. Study what is working for them, and do it better.
Another way to find which platform to use is by deciding who your target audience is. If your target audience is men, you will most likely advertise on Twitter and possibly YouTube. According to the Pew Research Center, 25% of Men use Twitter 80% of Men use YouTube. If your target audience is women, you may want to advertise on Pinterest and Instagram. 46% of Women using Pinterest compared to 16% of Men. While Instagram has 44% of Women to that of 36% of Men.
The content that you make and schedule out needs to follow where your audience is. Also, are you writing for a specific age group? 95% of people between the ages of 18-29 use Youtube. Those between the ages of 30-49 use Facebook.
Create engaging content that will capture the attention of your target audience.
This can be difficult to do, but it is not impossible. One way to create engaging content is by using visuals as much as possible. Women prefer pictures, and how to. While men prefer videos and entertainment.
This is the key to having a successful social media calendar. If your content isn’t interesting, no one will want to read it. You should always aim to provide valuable and useful information in your content. However, you don’t want to be too serious all the time. Mix it up with some funny or interesting content every once in a while.
There are so many different types of platforms to create Content. This may or may not be the most difficult part with a social media calendar. The difficult part is figuring out the type of content that will be engaging for your audience. As a beginner, I started with memes that are in my niche. I shared those memes with my audience and studied when I would see engagement and the time frame. With the popular memes, I then continued to show similar content.
You can certainly narrow down the types of memes within any niche. Maybe you and your audience are more into aesthetic pictures. When asking for feedback from your audience, be specific in what you are looking for. This is a good way to promote your content across the social media platform you are using. You can ask different questions throughout a month using the same content.
As your audience gives you feedback or responds to any type of published content, respond to them accordingly. Natural language, kind language, and always remember, they are helping you. Or engaging with you. It’s not about you, but make their comment about them.
At times, the real underlying issue is deeper than what your audience is expressing. For example, mom blogs. There are so many how-tos’s out there, that new mom bloggers end up getting lost. When the real issue is actually establishing a support system or group within your mom’s blog niche.
When responding back to comments, make them meaningful. Some people that may comment are shy. I know I was, and at times, I still am. But I appreciate it when someone adds more to my comment. With either another question or a relevant comment. Not just emoji’s. In some cases, emoji or a simple ‘Thank You.’ may suffice. Notice who is interacting with you, and begin to build that relationship.
At times, you may not have answers for your audience. Other times, they may even be displeased with your content or posts. Please don’t let this discourage you. It only means they are not your audience. Your audience will adore you. That is who you are creating for. Let the haters be, raise your chin high, and move forward.
With my second novel, I was turned down for it to be signed on to be paid by an app. I am grateful that that didn’t happen. At first, yes, I was discouraged. So much so that I fell behind in writing the story. But with the support of my small audience and friends in my author community, I am able to move forward with that book.
Experiment.
Don’t be afraid to try new things. If you see that one of your posts is getting a lot of engagement, try doing more of those kinds of posts. Alternatively, if you see that a particular type of post isn’t working, try something different.
This is a great way to find what works best for you and your audience. Try out different types of content, different posting times, and even new platforms. You may be surprised at what you find that works well for you and your audience.
Don’t be afraid to try something new – just be sure to track the results so you can learn from your experiments. When creating your content calendar, experiment at first. As mentioned in tip 2. Once you have figured out one type of content your audience enjoys, move on by experimenting with similar content.
At times it may become difficult to remember and manage all the content every day. This is why I strongly suggest using a calendar. Either digital or paper. Google Calendar is nice and easy to use. Apple has one built into their phone. Some people use Trello, others use printables. Notice what currently works for you in your daily life, and then add your content to it. I use both paper and pen with a digital calendar in Publer. More on that in the next tip. Tip Three:
Make sure your content is visually appealing. This is especially important on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. People are more likely to engage with posts that have visuals. If you’re not a graphic designer, don’t worry. There are a number of free tools online that can help you create visuals for your posts.
Canva is one I have been using for years. Their free version is great to get your feet wet in creating visual posts, ads, videos and more. Once you feel you have mastered the free version of Canva, upgrade to pro to gain more options for your posts. When I upgraded, a whole new world of possibilities opened up. And I’m not going back.

I use Google Calendar, and it works great for me when I do collaborations.There are many different types of digital calendars out there. Trello, Publer, Hootsuite, and more. I have tried all three. I find Publer to be the best as I can plan out my content for my audience across several platforms. Twitter, Youtube and more. However, there are other options that may work better for you. With Canva pro, I can schedule my Facebook and Instagram posts directly.
Most digital calendars have the ability to sync with your social media accounts, making it easy to keep track of everything. There are a number of different digital calendars to choose from, so find the one that works best for you.
My audience lives in Europe and America, although I live in Japan. Timing my content down to the time I want it to go live for my audience is amazing and convenient. Content visually on their calendar.
I can plan out my content on various social media platforms also. I can schedule my content each day down to even a specific time and time zone of my choosing. I have also color-coded my months so that I can see at a glance what type of content is going live on which platform. Try out different calendars and find what works best for you!
Printable Calendar
You can make calendars of all types in Canva. With the Canva Pro, you can add all types of fun stickers to your calendars. Make your calendar personal, and stand out. This can also be turned into content as you share your journey of putting your calendar together.
I use paper calendars when writing down doctor’s appointments, grocery lists, and my ‘to do’ lists. I do love making lists! With the stickers in Canva, I can color coordinate my months, weeks, days. Even organize my different ‘to do’ lists. I have tried to do this in Trello, but there is just some natural connection with writing things by hand and remembering them in my old brain.
My paper calendars end up turning into a form of a journal. Writing down feelings, accomplishments, my planning process for my content. I put my whole life there. Which then helps me transfer what I need to my digital calendars to schedule out my content.
There is no right or wrong way to schedule content. I always recommend planning out at least a month’s worth of social media content. Take a day to create and schedule each one out. In a sense, yes. Create your content in a large batch. That way, the rest of the month can be focused on building your audience and creating your core content. Either more blog articles, videos or in my case, novels.

I can usually tell what is working or not by the amount of engagement each post has. Facebook for example has analytics for you to see when peoople comment or post and the age group of who is engaged with your content.
